Hole & Corner x Burberry workshops at Here We Are
Hole & Corner renews its collaboration with Burberry in a series of workshops for the Here We Are show at Clerkenwell's Old Sessions House
We’re proud to announce that Hole & Corner is renewing its workshop partnership with Burberry, following on from for their Makers’ House event in February. As part of the Here We Are exhibition of British photography, curated by Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, photographer Alasdair McLellan and Lucy Kumara Moore, owner of Claire de Rouen books, we will be hosting two unique events.
The first, on Saturday 23 September, will see a live demonstration of a camera obscura by photographer Jonty Sale, bringing the streets of Farringdon within the walls of Old Sessions House.
The following weekend, on Saturday 30 September, the artist Martin Gayford will be presenting a photographic collage workshop.
Both workshops are part of our ongoing aim to bring to life the definition of a ‘hole-and-corner’ (‘a secret place; somewhere you go to escape, to be inspired, to contemplate and create’). With that in mind, Jonty Sale will bring the tranquility of his Wiltshire studio, based in an old brewery, to Central London with his camera obscura. Sale’s method is slow and deliberate, exploring rhythm as an expression of time and space. Landscape is treated as a departure point in his work rather than the destination, reflecting the rhythm and randomness, the whim of time and place concurrent. This approach will be brought to life with his drop-in demonstration – essentially allowing you to wander inside a giant camera and witness the magic of moving images projected from the outside world onto a screen.
Martin Gayford is a Lewes-based artist who brings an abstract quality to his work, despite the subject matter being of figures and places. ‘Sometimes the abstract element is quite apparent, sometimes not at all, but it’s always there,’ he says of the collage-based approach to his paintings. ‘I allow myself very few indulgences, so that what remains in my work is as unique as I can make it.’ His drop-in workshops will encourage visitors to discover their own unique style, using found imagery to create their own works of art. ‘When I’ve had time to absorb a finished work, I feel like I’ve invented somebody or something new – an uncle, street or event from another time or place,’ he says. Why not pop in on the day to invent your own uncle!
Visitors will also get the chance to explore both the Here We Are photographic exhibition (bringing together over 200 works from 30 of the 20th century's best social and documentary photographers, including Martin Parr, Dafydd Jones, Janette Beckman, Brian Griffin and Ken Russell) and Burberry’s new fashion collection, housed within the stunning setting of Old Sessions House – itself the embodiment of a ‘hole-in-corner’, having been closed to the public for decades…
